Butcher definitely shakes things up in this 11th volume of the Dresden Files series. Harry finds himself protecting a former (or not-so-former) critic when a very wounded Warden named Morgan. Morgan is being accused of murdering one of the wizarding leaders from the White Council. In fact, Morgan was found holding the murder weapon while at the scene of the crime.
A part of Harry, who previously faced his own experiences with misplaced justice from the White Council, would be more than happy for Morgan to take the blame, but the fact that Morgan is likely not guilty of the crime forces Chicago's only professional wizard to rise to the occasion. Unfortunately, it quickly becomes clear that he is in over his head.
A dark, dreamlike power attacks him and seems to be a danger to everything, magical and non. Dresden is forced to call on his friends (including his favorite lady detective, his white vampire brother, a local group of young adult werewolves, and even tiny fae) in order to not only protect Morgan, but seek out the real murderer before a lot of really bad things happen.
As usual, Butcher does a great job of balancing the action with the humor while also maintaining an intriguing mystery in the background. Fans of the series will find it filled with favorite heroes and villains, while also continuing to carry forth a lot of development for both primary and secondary characters. I know I couldn't put it down.
