One of the things I can do while grading is watch movies. I know. You are probably thinking how is that possible. Well, it works for me. I am a bit of a freak because I grew up in the generation that seems to need to have music or the television on while trying to get things done. It means we are great multitaskers, but some people say it also means there is something wrong with us.
Well, I was lucky enough to watch a little bit of horror as part of this. A few weeks ago, I bought the Child's Play series. I am not sure whether I posted about it, but I noticed that Wal-Mart had a set put together that allowed to buy four of the movies all together for just $19.95. I thought it was the whole series, but for some reason, it didn't include the first movie. I had to wait and pick that up the following week. I really can't complain because it was a bargain, overall, even though it still seems really strange.
Anyway, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the series, it centers around Chucky. He is the doll on the left above that is really in rough shape. He was actually a serial murder who was killed by the police as they were chasing him down in a toy factory. He used voodoo to have his soul trasfered to one of the dolls that seems to be modeled after those My Buddy dolls that were so famous when I was just a kid.
He ends up in a package and being given to this unfortunate kid. The little guy is unfortunate, because Chucky is not ready to give up his murderous ways. For the next three movies, he ends up following the kid around as he grows into adulthood, leaving a trail of bodies and leaving the kid with a reputation of being a little bit crazy.
By the time the fourth movie (Bride of Chucky) comes along, Chucky is moving on to drive more people crazy or kills them. We get a chance to meet his former fiancee. She ends up being pulled into a doll of her own. As they make their way across the country, they fall back in love and she ends up pregnant with there child, who becomes the center of the story in the comic Seed of Chucky.
Their poor offspring is a bit confused about his/her gender since he/she is not anatomically correct. While the parents are trying to give up their addiction to murder, the little one seems to be fighting off his genetic disposition, and none of them seem to be doing a great job.
These are not as gory as Freddie or Jason, but they really are a lot of fun.
