Bride & Prejudice - a Movie Review

The maker of Bend It Like Beckham brings another fun romantic commy with this modern adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Rather than classic Victorian England, this version is set in modern India, London, and LA and with a clearly Bollywood feel with wonderful humor and beautiful musical numbers.

The tale centers around the Bakshi family. At the core is Mrs. Bakshi, who is trolling the elite of Indian society with the hopes of finding suitable husbands for her four daughters in order to bring the family back up to its former wealthy glory. She is thrilled when an Balrag, an Indian living in London, comes to attend a wedding and falls in love with her eledest daughter Jaya.

Balraj is joined by his sister and his best friend, an American hotelier named Will Darcy. While at the wedding, Darcy and the second eldest daughter Lalita are drawn to each other, but seem unable to connect because of his tactless comments about India and his intense focus on his business. She, basically, thinks of him as a foreign snob looking to take advantage of her countyry.

Those familiar with the classic novel will not find many surprises in this film, but it does a wonderful job of presenting Indian culture with extravagent sets and decor as well as amazing costuming. As with many Bollywood movies, the music seems a bit out of place, but they definitely capture the emotions tied to the scenes. The dance seens, particularly those filled with tons of extras, bring back memories of some of the classical early films of America.

The acting is strong, with secondary characters being played by familiar faces from the series Lost and Rome, but the primary roles are filled with fairly unfamiliar faces that have no trouble carrying their roles. It is a fun romp through a classic romantic tale.
