I ended up getting this documentary from work after reading a review of it from Dale. I had never heard of it before, but I am glad that I had a chance to see it. It is the presentation of five families that are confronted with when a family member comes out. In all cases, it is a unique challenge because all of them are members of conservative Christian sects. Some of them are famous, such as Gene Robinson and Chrissy Gephardt. Others have very touching and moving stories to share.
It is through all of their stories that viewers are introduced to the history of how the Bible has been used by Christian leaders to treat gays and lesbians horribly based on six or seven passages.
The history is presented to highlight the overall treatment of gays and lesbians by some Christians, but the real focus is the tale of the five families included. It is through their heartwrenching experiences they viewers can see how difficult it can be to be what they are while also continuing to be a part of their families and their church. Some of them have easier paths to follow with the support of their families and communities while others are crushed by the weight of their experiences.
The documentary does a nice job of presenting a range of faithful people. On one end of the spectrum is scenes of speeches and press conferences by Anita Bryant and on the other end is Desmond Tutu. Between them lie interviews with both everyday Christians and specialists on the topic that run the full gamut of opinions.
