Keepsakes

FOUR keepsakes that I have kept after many years that have no or very little monetary value .

2 kinds of SESSION CLOCKS –one that my brother Ron and I had to climb up onto a chair to get at ages 7 and 9—we broke it ---40 years later I received it when mum went into a small unit still broken so I had it repaired --it was a non chimer
The other was a gift from an uncle who was 85 years old at the time –it chimes the quarter -half and hourly ., both of these are are on show in my lounge room but have been stopped. Those with memories of that tick tock and chimes during the night can understand why.
The picture of MISCHIEF that hung in my mothers bedroom now hangs in mine

A book is another AHH YOU THINK why a book , was given me by my mother on my 12th birthday , it belonged to my grandfather who died 10 years before I was born , why me and not my other brothers I still can't fathom and I never got around to ask , probably because I read a lot more than them .

BUT A HISTORY BOOK !----since reading it I have always been interested in history , even read of meetings of your mountain men on SNAKE RIVER during the1820s .

There have been two movies made of incidents in the book ZULU was one , the other ZULU DAWN, was stretched a bit at the start but the story was true , it did happen and the British soldiers were saluted after defeating the ZULU impi.

My book is titled THE HISTORY OF THE ZULU WARS ---1811 TILL 1879 published in my city ADELAIDE in 1879 using the dispatches received from the authors brother who was what we now call a war corespondent, he described how the battle of islandlwanna had been fought with a lot of sketches showing the aftermath 1300 killed on the British side

Also described with sketches from 1811 are the names of chiefs and their history , their cruelty in some are beyond belief but did happen and the tribe went onto being the major one under chief Cetawayo, It was and still is a good read. and beat reading comics of the day

When I married in 1956 I packed it in my belongings and even after moving 16 times since, I still have it , though having it out the other day I found it needs rebinding and I reckon its worth having done

These are priceless, as as I mellow with age, more keepsakes that I have have more meaning to me. That History Book would be a "keeper" for me too, love those kind of books.

Hi kev; I bought a grandfather pendulum clock 30 years ago, and it chimed every hour. I loved to hear it tick tock--but I worked nights and while I was trying to sleep during the day it would chime and tick tock so I stopped the pendulum. Now I'm retired and I can't get it to working again---I must have insulted it!

A great uncle of mine collected clocks, had over 200 of them when he died, all kinds. He kept them wound, and I remember how noisy it was at his house when they all chimed at the same time, plus all that tick-tock.
