Climate Change

See on our news services Obama is considering the tax on pollution , last week even china was talking about lowering her pollutions .
The opposition party here deny climate change and want to allow new coalfields
The labour party has already put a tax charge on emissions, but being the first country to do so set the tax a bit high and now intend to lower it until some other countries come up with a universal charge .
the tax money collected was intended to finance the disability scheme that has been brought in

What do you think about climate change ?

I think climate change is real and that our carbon emissions are at the root of major problems that we are still not addressing. I think I (we?) have lived in the last best time because the loonies have taken over the asylum and aren't fixing anything.

The part of this business that I like least is that "city planners" and those types are using the very serious problems of climate change to force people into cities. It's not obvious yet, but that is the trend. For example, raising (with tax) the price of fuel will force people to live close to where they work and shop. Sounds like a good thing, but when it's forced, it isn't good. It will be for younger generations to deal with, but they seem clueless.

The program I was thinking of was "Community Conversation" on the local PBS (WSKG) radio station. The one guy came right out and said that eight-dollar gas would be a good way to "force" people back to the cities. I was so pissed, but couldn't get through on the phone.....

I didn't know city planners were doing anything like that, but I am aware that poorer people are being stranded in suburbia - some not having a working car, others unable to buy gas. It may be that city planners are trying to address the problems of providing power and utilities to everybody.

looks like us Aussies are leading the world again in renewable energy the latest is the one raising steam from hot rocks by drilling down into the heat zone then pumping water down and up its has just been proved and intends to supply electricity to Roxby Downs oil and gas fields.
the emission tax on big business has raised price of electricity , but has been offset by the consumer getting credits from government to cover household cost using the tax collected.

Very good point. Here in Colorado, a law was just signed by the governor requiring rural electric companies to get a larger percent of their power from renewable sources like wind energy. While it sounds noble, and even superficially advantageous, similar requirements in other places have shown there are so many loopholes (such as buying 'credits' from other jurisdictions), it doesn't save resources, and dramatically increases electricity costs to rural residents and farmers. As you say, this will drive more people to the cities.

I think we are affecting our climate and destroying our world. I think there is a natural cycle but we are throwing it out of whack quicker than ever before.

must agree with you , its us oldies who should really push for lower emmissions, and make it a world fit for the future
reply by kevinshere on June 29, 2013 12:53 AM ()
YEs,it is here and like Martin says,a lot of people do not believe this is happening.
comment by fredo on June 28, 2013 7:56 AM ()
its those with dirty emissions industries that are the biggest non believers and are complaining of the costs of changing
reply by kevinshere on June 29, 2013 12:55 AM ()
Of course global warming is real; and it's almost too late now to take action which will ensure a safe world very far into the future.
comment by drmaus on June 28, 2013 7:27 AM ()
we only have one world and must cut back on emissions to save it

Back in the 1960s our water and air in the States was very polluted with chemical waste from factories, so the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) was formed to implement controls. Of course, the conservatives have fought any of its efforts, claiming they inhibit progress and profitability. But our air and water are so much cleaner, and of course they benefit from that just as much as the anyone else. Now they insist that the current global warming is part of a natural cycle and deny any human contribution to it. Even if pollution isn't causing it or making it worse, we would all of us continue to benefit from less pollution in the air and water.

The E P A here are doing a great job even with one hand tied up , You can really notice the difference of air quality away outback .
Carbon tax is what the polluter's are afraid of , we have the tax here but a bit high, it effects electricity prices amongst others, but some of the money collected is given back by increased pensions to cover it

It's here and though it might be too late we still have to do something about it--sadly most of the Right here don't believe it exists!!
comment by greatmartin on June 28, 2013 7:18 AM ()
Notice its only the biggest polluters who are in denial , doing something about it would effect their balance sheet
reply by kevinshere on June 29, 2013 1:08 AM ()
I don't think you can deny that global warming has forced it upon us. However we still have on Senator who says it doesn't exist.
comment by elderjane on June 28, 2013 5:48 AM ()
would bet he's getting some finance from big polluters
