Australian Political Elections

Australia at the moment has another 2 weeks of campaining to go for our federal election , unlike America with only 2 parties , we have numerous , the main ones who get to govern for 3 years are iether liberal or labour , then there are the greens and independants both the later held and had the balance of power in the last parliament, both gave their vote on bills to the labour government by aggrement ,but I dont expect them to do so well this time round.
Then there are the also run parties that get cash if they get a certain amount of votes , this is where it gets interesting as its not a matter of first past the post , we give preferences , which mean if I vote for one party I also have to tick the voting slip of who I would give my preference too.
Both the house of representative with half of the senate up for re election , the senate has a term of six years the house 3 years .
She has been queer this last six years , first Mr Rudd was voted in as prime minister for the labour party , then he became unpopular with all this climate change things going on and according to his own party became a dictator, a party room meeting was called and he was deposed on a vote and Ms Gillard took over his job , She took us to the next election and it was a hung parliament , both parties asked the greens and independents for their support which labour won and took government with 3 votesover the liberals .
More drama ensured 26 months into her term Ms Gillard brought in a carbon tax , then made a few other bad decisions , lost the support of the people when her % of support went lower that the Liberal party , again a party room meeting was called, nominations for leader were asked for with Mr Rudd standing again and he won easily .
At the moment Mr Abbott of the liberal party is ahead on preferences , so only 2 weeks for Mr Rudd to improve things

not as much is spent compared to America , all up 53 parties are contesting election . all financed by donations which must be reported to the electoral division how much and a 10.000 dollar limit

in a local election there were 3 candidates, the first had the most votes well ahead of the other 2 but lost when preferences were counted, the other 2 had given each other preference votes

We have other parties - the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, the Tea Party, even the Communist Party on some ballots - but if one them should happen to get a sizable following, the votes just act as a spoiler for one of the main party candidates, and we end up with the same corrupt government as before.

They are already running for 2016 here--how long are campaigns in Australia? How do you feel about having all the different parties? I know most of us here are unhappy with only 2 but money is such a big factor it is hard for a 3rd party to get their foot in the door.

the official campaign only lasts 2 weeks , unofficial has been since Rudd got his job , the liberals were that far ahead in the early polls they got real cocky----------- evens about now

Sounds like Mr. Rudd is an example of how people recognize a mistake once they've made it again.

Rudd won the 2007 election in a landslide on the work choice agreement that the opposition brought in , but then got big headed, will say he saved us in the financial crisis by creating work and spending on what was needed

This post sent me to Wikipedia for a more detailed look at Australian political elections, especially the voters' using preferences, which is new to me. An interesting aspect! Biggest issue here in the U.S. is in how elections and campaigns are financed and the overwhelming influence of corporate and hidden money. How does Australia handle campaign financing?

all done by donations up to 10.000 dollars are okay, any donations above that the donor and amount has to be reported to the electoral commission
so you see a lot of the smaller amounts being given with no record from who
