An Article About a Few Words ...

I just read an article about overused and redundant words.

One word they mentioned was "very."

They state that the word "very" should be struck from the English language.

I agree.

I tend to use it very, very often.

I think "very" is a useful word. Anything can be overused. I was asked recently to reduce a piece for publication by 100 words. When I finished, I could see the piece was much better. Now I write and go over it with cutting in mind. Instead of targeting words (awesome is an exception), the critics should support better English usage all around.

Whenever I write something, I have to go back through it and remove 'just' as in 'I just wanted to make sure...' used in the same way someone might use 'simply' and the currently over-used 'basically.' The sentences get along fine without it. 'Very' could be replaced with 'tremendously' for grins.

I am fond of archaic words that we seldom hear anymore. I don't want
them to be lost and replaced with awesome and amazing.
