Last year we spent $1800 having a chimney reflashed--turns out that the idiot roofer who did the roofing job hadn't reflashed it at all. I had tried to get the SOB to come and fix a few leaks right after it was done, and he did fix a few. Then his phone number was no linger in service, and that was the last I heard about him.
There was some water dripping from the ceiling right at the molding on Saturday night, so I set up the scaffold this morning to have a look up top. Naturally my photographically-inclined sweetie was on hand with the camera (and she did help get the second layer of scaffold assembled).

It's amazing that this section of the roof hasn't leaked before now. Even it you don't know the first thing about roofing, you'll see the problem here:

Roofs are usually (if done correctly) installed from the bottom up. These guys put the first end cap on at the top and overlapped it with the one closer to the bottom. The best thing to do would have been to unscrew both ends and redo it with the top one on top. But I can't reach all the way to the tip of the house from the scaffold, so I settled for caulk and Eternabond. It's supposed to rain on and off for the next few day (Ok, for a week) and I'll get to see how well I did.
I wanted to stay out there and continue to cut branches that were too close to the house, but I heard thunder while I was standing on a metal scaffold under a tree, so I decided to call it quits for today!
