The Real Bullying Problem

I continue to receive updates from the Department of State regarding the security situation in Mexico<-Click here! after having lived there for six years.
Recently, Jennifer and I were planning a trip to visit the town we used to live in and take some friends with us to show them around. The trip was in its tentative planning stage just between Jennifer and myself. The very next day, I receive an email from the State department which included the following region-specific information, naming the very town in which we lived and worked for six years. I've highlighted it below and provided a link to a previous post<-Click here! in which I referenced that beautiful, little town. Needless to say, our little trip is canceled and my heart is heavy for all my friends there.

Jalisco:Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Lake Chapala are major cities/travel destinations in Jalisco-Exercise caution throughout the state, particularly in rural areas and when using secondary highways. Defer non-essential travel to areas of the state that border the states of Michoacán and Zacatecas. The security situation along the Michoacán and Zacatecas borders continues to be unstable. U.S. government personnel are authorized to use Federal toll road 15D for travel to Mexico City; however, they may not stop in the town of La Barca or Ocotlán for any reason. Use of Highway 80 between Cocula and La Huerta is prohibited for personal travel by U.S. government personnel. U.S. government personnel are prohibited from personal travel to areas of Jalisco that border Zacatecas, and are prohibited from intercity travel at night. Please see above for general conditions for travel to Mexico.

I am so sorry it is unsafe for you and Jennifer to return to the town
and people you loved. I love Mexico but we no longer feel comfortable
there.

Nor do we.

Well, that's just terrible. A person doesn't quite know what to think about that - was it shaky when you were there, or has it gone this far downhill in the time you've been gone?

We didn't realize it at the time, but it was steadily deteriorating.

Visited Guadalajara in the 80s, long before security was an issue. But it was very touristy and the narrow streets were clogged with tour busses and the air was barely fit to breathe because of the exhaust fumes. I'm sorry I couldn't see it before it was discovered. I do remember taking a taxi ride from the hotel to an obscure restaurant in the country side and wondering if we could trust the driver and get back alive.

It's sad the world has to have so many warnings about so many places!
