Two Spanish men have been taken into custody by police in the Gambia after being accused of trying to solicit sex from male taxi drivers.

The EU nationals were arrested on Friday after complaints from the drivers and remain in prison. A police spokesman said they were "helping in the investigation."

Last month the President of Gambia said gay men and lesbians must leave the country within 24 hours or face "serious consequences."

The Daily Observer reported that the President had issued:

"An ultimatum to homosexuals, drug dealers, thieves and other criminals, to leave The Gambia or face serious consequences if caught.

"The President equally warned all those who harbour such individuals to kick them out of their compounds, noting that a mass patrol will be conducted on the instructions of the IGP and the director of the Gambia Immigration Department to weed bad elements in society.

"Any hotel, lodge or motel that lodges this kind of individuals will be closed down, because this act is unlawful." he said.

"We are in a Muslim dominated country and I will not and shall never accept such individuals in this country."

The Dutch government has summoned the representative of Gambia in the Netherlands to come to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an explanation of the President's comments.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised gay citizens not to disclose their sexual orientation if they visit the Gambia.

Gambia, a mostly Muslim country of 1.7 million people, punishes homosexual acts, even in private, with up to seven years in prison.

A former British colony, the country has been ruled by President Jammeh since a bloodless coup in 1994.

Last year he horrified scientists by announcing that he had developed a "miracle cure" for HIV/AIDS.

Hundreds of Gambians lined up to be "cured" by President Jammeh, who treats his patients by rubbing a mysterious herbal paste into their ribcages and then instructing them to swallow a bitter yellow drink, followed by two bananas.

The therapy is administered repeatedly over several weeks.

According to Mr Jammeh, AIDS sufferers are cured within "three to thirty days."

The President announced his alleged cure in January to a gathering of perplexed foreign diplomats.

Government radio and TV addresses publicised the treatment, which Jammeh provides for free.

It has the backing of the Gambian Health Ministry.

Mr Jammeh refuses to disclose the ingredients of his herbal concoction, saying only that the treatment uses seven plants - "three of which are not from Gambia".

His official website claims that patients have experienced a "marked improvement" in their health as a result of the treatment and scoffs at critics who dispute its efficacy.

Your English is actually quite impressive. I always take it as an honor when someone makes the effort to learn my language.
You want me to define what a Leftist is? That would take more time than I have to spare but I'll try to give you a sense of it. You might know them by other English terms: Liberals, bleeding hearts, star gazers or quite a few terms. Leftist thought is ruled by good intentions and the emotions of the heart. This leads liberals to the belief that socialism and communism are good things since they seem to solve the problems of social inequality. Unfortunately communism is a wreckless and false ideal because it is built on the notion that people are essentially good and will work to provide for all rather than for their own personal advancement. It's not true and while socialism may work for a generation or two it always evolves into something else or collapses completely.
Holland, I believe, is among the most socialist of all Western European countries. I'm interested in learning how well your society is progressing under these conditions. I'm also interested in learning about the effect of the mass invasion of Europe by Islamists. I hope you will express yourself at our blog a great deal more often.

I think it's sad for any government or leader to exercise such bigotry. It is criminal to mistreat ANY person simply on some "differences", regardless of what those differences are. I will not condone such behavior and I do not condone such behavior, but I must play the devil's advocate here and state that there are laws and such often in place that still must be obeyed. I think it is wrong to discriminate...however, if it is my home or my yard or my country (meaning I am the one put in control), then I can do what I feel is best for the safety and comforts of my family, friends, neighbors, and/or citizens. Others may not see it as right, but it may be what is wanted by those in charge (and maybe by the people themselves). The thing is, in this case, there are a lot of criminal injustices being committed by a lot of innocent people who do not deserve it ... but, remember, they are all perceived as violators of the law(s) and beliefs. You have to admit one thing, though, a warning was issued to allow for "people in fear" to get out, which is more than can be said for some places. If there's going to be a "raid" to clear out these unwanted people, it could be as bad as what we've all heard and read about in history books. Not all ever had "fair" warning. Again, mind you, I do not condone anything, I'm just pointing out some arguments that seem to exist.

You are probably right to criticise Jammeh and Gambia's bigotted policy in general. My point is the irony of Leftists (there are very few Right leaning gays) and their lack of interest in the slaughter of innocents until the innocents being murdered share their own class identity. When I said "I love it" I was talking about the irony that seemed so obvious to me.

That is so sad! It is always sad when the government feels the need to kill someone for being who they are.

Ah, James, looks like you have acquired another fan--I thinki he escaped from that other site where there are only right wingers!
And, of course, they have to be nasty in their comments, especially where it concerns gay people--why doesn't he/she just mention the other 'innocent muslims' or write his/her blog about it??

I love it. No one on the Left is ever going to mention the heads that have been lopped off of thousands of other innocent non-Muslims. But let them touch one fair hair of a gay person and baby we're going to war! Do you think maybe you could work a little balance into your thought processes? And could you make the effort to notice the bigotry in your own eye before you accuse others?
