Judi Dench.macular Degeneration.

My favorite actress who is battling Macular Degeneration.
So sorry to hear this. She is a very lovely person

Bond actress Judi Dench is in a battle to save her eyesight from macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness for those aged 55 and older in the US.

Dench, 77, one of Britain's best-known actresses, told Britain's Daily Mirror that her eyesight was already so bad that she couldn't even read her own scripts and she was relying on friends and family to keep her up to speed with her lines.

“I can’t read scripts any more because of the trouble with my eyes," she said. "And so somebody comes in and reads them to me, like telling me a story.

"It’s usually my daughter or my agent or a friend and actually I like that, because I sit there and imagine the story in my mind.

“I've got what my ma had, macular degeneration, which you get when you get old.

"I had wet in one eye and dry in the other and they had to do these injections and I think it’s arrested it. I hope so."

Macular degeneration — the deterioration of the central portion of the retina — affects more than 10 million Americans, according to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.

According to Reuters, there are two basic types: "dry," which leaves people with blurry central vision, and "wet," a more serious type which can cause blindspots.

"Approximately 85 percent to 90 percent of the cases of macular degeneration are the "dry" (atrophic) type. Approximately 10-15 percent of the cases of macular degeneration are the "wet" (exudative) type."

Dench, who won an Oscar in 1998 for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in "Shakespeare in Love," told the Mirror that: "The most distressing thing is in a restaurant in the evening I cant see the person I'm having dinner with. You get used to it. I've got lenses and glasses and things and very bright light helps. I can do a crossword if it's bright sunshine, but if a cloud comes out the next minute I cant see anything."

Dench said she had received treatment which she hoped would prevent further damage, and that she had no plans to retire.

Dench's latest role is in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," starring alongside Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel, NME reported.

Her seventh Bond film, "Skyfall," is due to be released later this year.

Dame Judi is a great actress. Losing your sight would be horrible. My ex-
mother-in-law lost hers in her last years but she lived to be l0l.

I did read Marta's comment with much interest. I also did a lot of reading on line and there is an injection they can give in one's eye but the side effects sound worse than the disease. I take Occuvite which is a "vitamin" that will help deliver more blood to the macular to keep it healthier. Oddly enough, my sister who is three years older than me, and I am 71, does not have the disease. I am the lucky one.

Here is a catchy one.One of my friend at the club saying that she take fish oil.
This was recommended by the doctor? She does not have this disease but something about her eyes giving you some kind of problem and did not bother her too much on this.
Good luck there.

It's one of those things we hope won't happen to us, but can't control. I'm trying to figure out if it is beneficial to take the special vitamins in hopes of preventing it entirely, or if one should wait until diagnosed and start taking them to slow the progression.

I think I would hate losing my sight more than any other sense.

Yes,that is true. That is one of the reason that we have to take care of them.

I also have macular degeneration and my mother had it. Mine is in the early stages even though it was discovered about 4 years ago. I 'm still working, can drive and still read which I love to do. The main problem I have now is I require bright lighting when I read or am on the computer. Judi Dench is one of my favorite actresses; I was really sorry to read she has this disease. I agree, Fredo, she is a lovely person.

Yes, stem cells are being used in advanced clinical research, but I don't know what treatment Dame Judi is getting. Also, tiny implanted cameras have been used with some success. ABC News did a little piece about that as part of their coverage of Dame Judi's announcement. I started getting check-ups years ago, as I only see with one eye due to a birth defect, but there isn't anything preventive one can do, as it's a genetic short straw you have or you don't. I don't think there is DNA testing for it yet that would predict who would get it or not. But if it is in your close family, it's a concern. My Mom's appeared in her early 70s. I do take vitamins for eye health (Lutein) and keep my fingers crossed.

My heart goes out to her. Fortunately, Dame Judi has access to and can afford the best care, and advances have been made in treatment. May she be helped! My mother also lost her vision to macular degeneration. I worry about getting it myself.

Yes,I hope that you do not get it.Can you know before hand having your eyes check up?
