Here are a couple of pictures of the ‘Scold’s Bridle’ – look awful, don’t they!
The first one is a selection of models which must have been available - heck of a thing when they can choose betwen the most 'comfortable/un-comfortable' one . . .
One of the pictures is from New England – 1685! So they were, in use over with you (Laura T.Bend & I were discussing this).
. . . Wwweelllllll, once upon an evening, many moons ago, lynniesscartissue and I, did dress-up in aid of 'Children in Need' week, as two 'Wild West' 'bar-room' girls'- laced-up boots, scarlet and black flouncy dresses and of course . . . our 'whips' 
a milder side now.
