Wildlife

Last night there was another skunk in my backyard. My son replaced my motion detector light and it is turning on several times every night. I didn't have a light for a year. I see it go on when I am in bed so I get up and raise my screen and pop my head out. Usually there are possums or raccoons out there, but twice now I have seen a skunk. I have never had skunks in my yard before although other neighbors have. This seems to be a good year for skunk populations, according to the comments in the local paper. I clap my hands and say shoo and the critters run away. I am upstairs so there is no danger of getting sprayed. With all this wildlife traffic, I can see where my windfall apples went last year. I used to have to pick up lots of apples from under the tree. Until four years ago, I always had at least one dog. The dog scent kept the critters away, I think. Now they are feasting on windfalls.

My wife traps feral cats for spay/neuter, and sometimes catches a skunk. She got sprayed good recently and had to disrobe before she re-entered the house. It amazes me how long the skunk odor of roadkill remains about the highway.

And driving along the highway, someone always says Smell the skunk?

My biggest fear is to capture a skunk in my "coon" trap. Then what do I do? I can't shoot it even if I owned a gun. Dogs used to keep all the critters away. I'm still not going to get another one. Electric fence does the trick.

I think you would have to release it in your yard very carefully. And hope it doesn't come back.

This whole climate has been different the last two years. You may need
to adopt a dog.

The grandchildren are begging for a dog. We have a cat and a gecko. You don't have to come home to take them out.

We rarely get skunks here, and I'm glad because they will take residence under the porch or something. I've read that fox urine is used in repellents to keep small animals away, but we've got this fox hanging around the yard all the time, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Have to admit, though, I don't see a lot of fox urine getting spread around.

I think I may have to buy some fox urine since I don't have a pet fox unlike some people.

When skunks invade home perimeters it means the food sources (root grubs) in their native locations are lean. Blame that on the dry conditions this year.

That never occurred to me. Usually the skunks go to the green yards where people water. I don't water and don't get grubs. It is a different kind of year now.
