Lost Friend

There was a train that derailed not far from where I live this week. The first thought was that it happened because of the extreme heat that we have been having. That caused the rails to buckle and the train went off the track. Then 28 cars full of coal got stuck on the bridge over the road below and the weight of 28 cars full of coal caused the bridge to collapse. The next day as the workers were cleaning up the mess, they spotted a car under the debris. My friend Zorine Lindner and her husband were in that car. By a quirk of fate, they happened to be under the bridge when it collapsed. Zorine worked for 25 years as a social worker for the school district where I worked. She impacted thousands of lives over the years. She was a terrific lady and will be missed.

Geez! I'm so sorry. I'm not one that believes "everything happens for a purpose" (the "rationalization response"). This verifies my belief. Tragic.

At least 700 people went to the funeral yesterday. They were loved.

My theory is that our days are numbered, and we will die on the day our name is written in the Book of Life. If we don't go one way, we go another. But that doesn't make it any easier to accept something that seems so random.

I don't want to be on the plane when the pilot's name comes up, as they say.

The longer I live the more I realize that life can throw you a curve.
I am so sorry for the loss of your friends and a fine couple. We just don't
ever know what fate has in store.

I guess that is life but it just doesn't seem fair. They should be enjoying their retirement now.

A couple of derailments, according to the article, but they both were long ago (one in the 80's and the other in the 70's).

Yes, I heard that now, too. It seems that something should have been done then.

Suzi, I am very sorry about your friend. I heard about the crash when it happened on the news or the radio. I hope they get answers as to how this could have happened. Taken from a Daily Herald article: Glenview and Northbrook officials have asked Union Pacific representatives to attend a community meeting in Glenview on July 16 to discuss “the circumstances of the derailment, the safety history of the viaduct and to provide detailed information and schedules regarding construction of the replacement viaduct,”

Again, I am sorry for your loss.

Thank you. I understand there was a derailment there another time.

Some accidents require as series of events to produce them that look to be too much for pure coincidence. But of course, we don't see the big picture leading up to such things.

It looks like this was just one of those series of coincidences.

Sorry about your friend--anyone know why they were under the bridge--not tat it really matters.

It is a major road in a residential neighborhood. The railroad bridge crossed over the road. They live a block away. They were just out for a drive.

Looks like they were driving on the road that ran under the bridge and they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
