Pulling a Calf ... (Graphic)

It was a rough day on the ranch. I ended the day by pulling a calf with the help of my neighbor who had never pulled a calf before. Let's just say it was my know how and his braun that got the job done. The calf is alive and well.

After watching the cow struggle most of the day, I decided she needed help. The veterinarian was unavailable and so I called the neighbor. He was really nervous about trying to help, but I convinced him that together, we could do it. I put the pulling chains on the calf's legs by reaching inside the cow and sliding the chains on. It was hard because the calf was too big and there wasn't enough room for my small little hands and the legs of the calf.

Then, the neighbor hooked the chain to a come-along and cranked that calf right out of that cow while I yelled, "Slow down." He was in way too much of a hurry and I knew it wasn't good for the mother. Also, that calf hit the ground pretty hard. Poor thing.

It wasn't breathing, but I worked on it for a minute or so and got it's nose cleared enough and it started breathing.

Tonight, I'm happy but really worn out. My back is killing me. After a good shower to get rid of the yuck that was all over me, I am feeling pretty relieved. Although... I am ready to sell all of the cows.

Goodnight to everyone... from the ranch - Annie :o)
