There is No Other

Whenever you meet anyone, no matter how briefly, do you acknowledge their being by giving them your full attention? Or are you reducing them to a means to an end, a mere function or role?

What is the quality of your relationship with the cashier at the supermarket, the parking attendant, the repairman, the "customer"?

A moment of attention is enough. As you look at them or listen to them, there is an alert stillness - perhaps only two or three seconds, perhaps longer. That is enough for something more real to emerge than the roles we usually play and identify with. All roles are part of the conditioned consciousness that is the human mind.

That which emerges through the act of attention is the unconditioned - who you are in your essence, underneath your name and form. You are no longer acting out a script; you become real. When that dimension emerges from within you, it also draws it forth from within the other person.

Ultimately, of course, there is no other, and you are always meeting yourself.

I don't want to brag, but one of the things I thought made me a fairly good teacher was that I stared individual students in the eye. I might say, "look at me". It showed I cared. Sometimes I miss teaching.

Really listening, and seeing, not just looking, very powerful. I think you still are a good teacher. Thanks for sharing here, it is always appreciated.

yes,go along with shesaidwhat.Everytime I go to the cashier they are puzzled.Like how are you and the family.Try to smile more and your day will be better. They probably think that I am just a whacko. Are you unhappy with our jobs etc.I talked to them all of the time.Good relationship there.
You hit the jackpot again.

So too you, that you take a few moments to do that, BRAVO. Each of us can make a difference, just a smile and a pleasant greeting...heart-felt!

Great post! I sometimes notice that when I engage with (especially) cashiers, they almost seem shocked by the attention. It takes them a couple of seconds to come out of their non-attentive coma and respond, but then they perk up and seem a bit more interested in the moment.

Yes it takes a moment to show, "I see you"
