Winter Ice

Here is a picture from my place in Colorado, taken by a friend. Aren't cell phones great?

They have had a lot of winter so far - several inches of snow, sub zero temperatures, warming winds bringing the daytime high up to almost 60 degrees, and more snow expected tomorrow. Snow news is good news, the more the better.

This is the general direction the camera was pointed for the picture above, taken earlier in the winter:

love the look of snow - these are great pix. would not want to be a trout surviving in the winter by eating insect larvae. no no no.

I wouldn't want to be in there turning over rocks to see what's under them, but I'm not a fisherman, either.

I like the top photo more, for some reason. I've had mostly just rain, but wish a little snow would cover my ugly lawn. I left it ugly this year, counting on the snow...

If we have snow that stays on the grass the voles make half-tunnels on the surface of the lawn under the snow. That fox better be paying attention and doing something about it!

We are really behind in snowfall this winter. I am concerned that we will be having drought conditions next summer.

Same with Nevada. There is zero snow up in the northern part (near where the Donner Party had that bad winter), and they are very concerned about the fire season.

Isn't ice something you get from the freezer part of your fridge? That you put in drinks?
And NO cell phones are NOT great!!!!

A nice tropical drink with lots of tinkly ice cubes out on your breezeway sounds good right now.

Brrrr but pretty!

The fish are sleeping in their pools under the ice, the fishermen are dreaming of spring. It's catch and release, so the fish are old friends. I always hope that the conditions are good for the little ones to grow, and the older ones to prosper.

It is pretty but I don't want any. I guess that is selfish because we need
a lot of moisture.

Rain would be good at your house - not too much, just enough. This is the driest in northern Nevada in 130 years.

Our winter so far has been so mild. Yesterday it was warm enough with passive solar to open my windows for the afternoon. Crazy. I worry the crocuses will get ahead of themselves and the tree buds won't be able to contain themselves, only to get snowed on and frozen. It feels like March. So I've been wondering what your Colorado home looked like — and here it is! Looks beautiful. Are the trout sleeping?

Yes, they are under the ice in pools. Their metabolism slows down, and they supposedly eat insect larvae and smaller fish that live in the mud at the bottom. The river is only about 6 inches deep under there, and not a muddy bottom, but the bugs live under the rocks. Last summer's high snow melt/long runoff period left the fish skinny and undernourished, so I hope they get through the winter and don't eat all their babies.
