Wildlife: the Elk

image

This elk, wearing a radio tracking collar, came for a visit today. She drank out of the hummingbird feeder, then out of the river, and then walked right toward me. There is a big elk herd in Estes Park and the members are used to being around people, and that's probably where she came from.

This is the last look for the post-flood river at low level. More water was released from the dam today, and it will not go back down until October.

We also have a mink along the riverbank.

I wish we had more wildlife to photograph. Yesterday I saw a mink along the river, and hope it managed to stay out of the way of the bank restoration work.

She looks so relaxed and care free. Wonder why she wandered away from the
herd.

I'm pretty sure that's the same one who came through here last summer by herself. I don't know if she belongs to the Estes Park herd or the Loveland herd - maybe both.

are the elk friendly or should you be afraid? love the wildlife pictures you always post!

When they come in the yard, the elk are like big cows - docile and intent on eating the bushes. We go out there to shoo them away from petunias, and they don't mind, but we don't get very close. They can be aggressive if someone gets between the mother and her babies: people have been killed, but they asked for it.
