Wildfire activity is increasing in Montana and Idaho. The Northern Rockies and Eastern Great Basin Geographic Areas have a total of 16 large fires listed on today’s Incident Management Situation Report. The entire map can be seen here.

On Monday the Saddle Complex in northeastern Idaho (#6 on the map) grew from about 1,000 to 18,275 acres, crossing the Idaho-Montana state line. The Phoenix National Incident Management Organization Team is en route to help manage this fire and others on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

So far, we have been lucky here, knock on wood, no fires in the area.

You guys have a summer forest fire season and ours is in winter when everything dries up. The smoke in that last picture looks horrific!

We were lucky right around here this summer because it was cooler than usual for longer (but hot now), and fewer lightning-caused fires. But every year is a new gamble.

The Great Dismal Swamp in VA has been burning for weeks.

Some of the fires here are considered good, they clean out underbrush so the big trees can grow, but with population growth, it's hard to keep it safe for everyone.

It looks like damaging fires are happening from coast to coast at different times!

The desert of the southwest has shifted to Texas and Oklahoma.

I fear some of these fires will be burning until snow starts falling in a big way, if enough snow comes when the season changes.

Here on the front range of the Colorado Rockies our early winters can be very dry and we don't get good moisture until March or April, and even then we sometimes miss out.
