Storm Update

It snowed since 10 pm last night, and because today's temperature hovered right at 32 degrees, a lot of the snow melted and isn't much on the ground. Down at lower altitudes, the roads are just wet, and there is hardly any accumulation of snow. There ARE some parts of the state that are having a rough time, Interstate 70 in the mountains, for one, but those roads are always dicey when there is any kind of weather. So it's not a big-deal storm so far. Better to worry ahead and prepare than be caught off guard.

Colorado has a new law that requires passenger vehicles to have either snow tires or four-wheel drive when the roads get bad so their cars are less likely to go off the road and cause congestion. There are different rules for semi-trucks: the usual chain law that we've had for years, and at some point the passenger cars also have to have chains. It has helped a lot to keep traffic moving.

It seems like I got a lot done today. For one, a man from the Loveland Fire Department called to tell me they are sending two trucks to my May 7 Wildfire preparedness event. And I worked on the shopping list for food. We are paying $100 for a band, so that cuts into the food budget. I think I'm going to eliminate the potato salad in favor of pasta salad - or vice versa.

Lucky break! I've been in three 100-year floods already to the name will have to change sometime. Interesting how we expect the worst after experiencing it.

We're constantly reminded that it's faulty reasoning to think of them as 100 year or 500 year floods and yet the government people and other experts continue to use that terminology because it's easier to say than decimal points. During our 2013 flood, I was standing on the riverbank watching trees and propane tanks floating down the river, thinking: "But we HAD our 100 year flood in 1976, we're not due for another one yet." It seems like my various neighbors and other landowners are aware we could have another big event any year at all, but in our hearts we don't believe it.

The potato salad would be a lot less work, and I suspect much cheaper than the pasta salad, but the pasta salad sounds like more fun. I've got people willing to help prepare the salads, so it will come down to budget.

Now I am wondering what I would choose - pasta or potato salad. Nope, can't do it.

Our growing season is ridiculously short.

Ironic that you're watching a snowstorm dissipate, while planning something for wildfires. Always something fun in Colorado.

Our weather stations are showing massive storms up your way--one city cancelled over 100 flights--but I guess it isn't in your area.

Yes, 852 flights (71 percent) in and out of Denver International were cancelled on Saturday. Sunday is supposed to be back to normal, or as normal as it can be trying to catch up on all those flights.
