Those Phone Calls

A recent telemarketing call on our landline was identified on the Caller ID as "Phone Scam." We didn't answer it and filed a complaint with the federal Do Not Call list, as if that will help.

A couple of years ago I received something in the mail from the Do Not Call list people saying they were pursuing one of my complaints, so maybe that agency does try to do something about unauthorized telemarketing calls. I'm not sure why they went to the trouble of mailing me something, though, should have used that money for direct enforcement.

We have lately been receiving recorded Spanish-speaking calls on our pre-paid cell phones, and looking up the phone number on one of the "Who Called Us?" sites I see that a lot of pre-paid customers are receiving that type of call. I get the feeling the cell phone companies are selling our numbers to the telemarketers and they are assuming that a lot of Spanish speakers use pre-paids so are taking a shot at us being a potential customer.

In defense of our cell phone company, maybe it's easy for the phone spammers to use computers to come up with a list of numbers to call - just figure out what bloc of numbers has been issued to Tracfone in a given area code and dial them all in sequence. Not that I think Tracfone has any scruples about selling our phone number.

Something interesting from the Internet:

"Your utility companies (water, gas, electric, cable, garbage, etc) collect contact information from their customers and sell that list to their marketing "affiliates". Most of the time, you've agreed to allow them to do it when you sign up. If asked, they will assure you that they are only sharing with THEIR affiliates for the purposes of product research.

Unfortunately, there is nothing stopping those affiliates from collecting this information and selling it to anyone who wants to buy a list.

Comcast and Waste Management are the worst when it comes to sharing your personal information with others. Another source of problems come from signing up for those supermarket "loyalty" cards. You are essentially putting your phone number directly onto a call list yourself."

Is there a solution? Maybe. It requires some action on the part of the consumer.

According to the website Dummies.com we need to write a letter to all of our vendors specifically telling them we do not want our information shared with their affiliates unless we give written permission, this includes any organization that sends you one of those privacy notices. You'll find a sample letter on that website, and more information about where to send it.

I think I'm going to try this for a year: respond to all those mailed privacy notices with this form letter, and proactively mail out the letters to my utility companies. But since they already have our phone numbers and have given them out, I don't think it's going to do much good unless we get new numbers.

I only have a cell phone and never answer it if I don't know the number calling. That seems to work.

I just thought it was interesting that the telemarketers were making robo calls in Spanish to pre-paids, and epidemic starting around mid-October 2010.

The only solution may be to keep changing your phone number, since the Do Not Call List seem to have some holes. If I get an unwelcome marketing call, I say right off that I'm on the list and they are breaking the law. They hang up of course. I make be the only person on the planet without Caller ID on my landline. I never get spam calls on my cell. I'm with CREDO Mobile.

We're going to be a lot more cautious about giving out our phone number, cell or land line, to anyone, even vendors or banks, and see if that helps.

I do not answer calls if I do not recognize the number and so far I have not received any solicitations on my cell phone.

These cell phone calls are in Missed Calls. I'm wondering if they are targeted to certain area codes like this one we have in Las Vegas.

The Do Not Call list seems to be working for us. We may get two or three calls a year and that's it. Got a call from a voice sounding Indian once to say we were eligible for "prizes" if I would just give him our bank account no. "I don't think so," I said sweetly. Some caller I.D. info may say "Out of Area" or "Private Caller". Many times those are friends. I answer them. If it's someone I don't want to talk with, I say so. Before they get through the first sentence of something I know is a spiel, I say, "Not interested," and hang up. Too many times people think they have to be polite and wait for an opening. They won't give you one. Duh.

I'm happy for you that you only get two calls a year. Around election time we got that many in an hour.

I never answer a phone call unless I can recognize the caller or number.

Summertime I never know if it's a potential cabin renter, but wintertime, I'm like you, don't pick up. And we don't hardly know anybody who'd call us, so that narrows it down a lot.

The Do Not Call list here in Canada works. I never receive Canadian telemarketers calls. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about the phone calls from India.

You are so lucky! I attribute our problem down here to our self-interested politicians who made sure our program was set up so political calls and 'survey calls' are not covered by Do Not Call. There are so many loopholes it doesn't work at all. I didn't realize India would call, that must be interesting.

Do Not Call List is a joke. They get information from other source.
there is no privacy what so ever. The whole thing is a scam.
they will get your information one way or the other.
You have hackers that get in your computer and cell phone numbers etc.
Cannot trust anyone.Even here they get all the information.

I agree. We have gotten the same calls year in, year out, from the same people regardless of how many complaints are filed.
