These are a mixed bag:
New York, I Love You
"A companion piece to Paris, je t'aime, this valentine to New York cleverly blends nearly a dozen love stories, each presented by a different filmmaker. From Central Park to Brooklyn and Queens, each tale features the Big Apple as a central character. The writer-directors include Natalie Portman and Brett Ratner, and the cast features Shia LaBeouf, James Caan, Julie Christie, Christina Ricci, Ethan Hawke and dozens more." - Netflix
This would be good for fans of New York City because it's filmed in that city. It took me awhile to figure out that it was several little movies all rolled into one. I kept thinking it was going to resolve into a unified story, by maybe the plots converging or something to tie it together. Overall, it was pretty good, especially if you're not sitting there saying "finally! this is what it's about!" only to have that story end in a few minutes. Definitely a good movie for the airplane.
Trucker
Near the end of the four days of movie watching, I was running out of titles that sounded interesting. I reluctantly watched this one because it said it was about a semi-truck driving woman who goes on a road trip with her estranged 11-year-old son. I didn't really want to see another of those parent-child road trip movies, but it was different enough that I'm glad I watched it. That vaunted road trip was only a small part of the plot. The acting was good, the story moved along, and like I said, it was different enough from all those other movies with the same premise to be a pretty good movie. I respected the story line a lot because there are no easy outs: the mother never pretends to have bonded with her child, she didn't want to be tied down by home making and parenting, and her ex-husband is going to die from cancer, so the kid has to decide whether he wants to stay with his mother with whom he has a truce, but no warm fuzzies or his dad's girlfriend who is willing to raise him, but she's not family.
The Informant
This is a really good movie with Matt Damon playing a biochemist working for Archer Daniels Midland and he blows the whistle on the company for price-fixing. Over a period of several years he helps the FBI gather evidence, and then the story twists and it turns out he goes to prison for embezzlement and taking kickbacks. I was totally amazed at the turn of events and how the guy's fantasy world started unraveling. This is based on a true story, and it's well-done. I'm looking forward to seeing it again some time.
