A Law Abiding Citizen
This is a good action-crime thriller about how the justice system gets perverted by the ambitions of the district attorney who makes a deal with horrible murderers. The surviving victim, a man who had to watch his wife and small daughter raped and murdered during a home invasion by repulsive criminals waits 10 years to get revenge, and how he does it is very puzzling and mysterious and creepy until it is revealed to us how he managed to kill a bunch of people while he was in prison, solitary confinement yet.
It's violent and all that, but the plot is good and hasn't been done before, like reading a good murder mystery along the lines of the old Alex Cross stories by James Patterson.
Whiteout
"The lone U.S. Marshal at a research station in Antarctica, Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) stumbles upon the continent's first murder victim. With only three days left until the sun sets for six months, Carrie races to solve the complex mystery before darkness falls." - Netflix
I enjoyed seeing what life is like at one of those Antarctica research stations, but otherwise this is not a very good movie. It was easy to guess who dun it, and there was a fight scene outside in a blizzard where you couldn't tell the characters apart because they were totally bundled up in cold weather gear. It was like an obligatory fight sequence because a chase sequence with cops wouldn't have worked, and it was a sure bet the good guys would triumph. Turned out the baddy they were fighting with wasn't even the ultimate baddy. The movie is based on a "graphic novel" which is a comic book. When I saw that in the credits it explained a lot about the shallow plot and shaky logic.
