More Meetings

I debated with myself about going to tonight's coalition meeting for a different river than mine. I always learn something at these meetings, but I've lost a lot of the incentive to go because I realize the people running the coalition I'm involved in don't want good ideas, so I'll have to keep them to myself. What tipped the balance was the realization that if I miss one meeting it will be easy to start skipping them all, and they are a good excuse to get out of the house.

Tomorrow my friend Diane, who is no stranger to car troubles, is going to help me start the tractor. It's a skidsteer with a front loader bucket. The name skidsteer comes from the way the steering works: when you want to turn, the wheels on one side stop turning, while the other keep moving, and that causes it to turn. It tears the heck out of a lawn, but they get good traction.

We haven't started it for two years.

Once I get it going, I can do all kinds of scoopy projects around the property here, and I can wrap a chain around some of the debris to pull it away from the trees.

This weekend some fishermen are coming to help with projects, and it will be nice if we have the bucket loader to assist.

It boggles my mind to picture you hauling all that stuff around your yard. Be safe.

This afternoon I tried scraping up piles of sand to cover the sticky clay, and it seemed like it was working, but the wheels of the skidsteer tore up the driveway so it looks really messy. I'm thinking it will pack down when we drive the cars in and out.

You're welcome to come take it for a spin anytime. Deep snow is the most fun.

If they don't want good ideas why do they meet?

The non-profit group that the county designated to run the coalition is just doing it for a percentage of the grant money they are able to bring in. They are doing the minimum to look like the flood victims are being helped, but it's mostly BS. The funding they raise will go to fix the damage of the big landowner who has the most political clout, and the little people are out of luck. I'm fortunate that I can handle all my damage by myself and don't need their help.

You sure must be busy all the time.

Since I'm usually such a hermit, it's fun to have something to get me out of the house for a change. I spend hours every day finding information to post on our area's Facebook page, and it's really nice when people walk up to me and thank me.

I hope you and Diane can get it started. It is a wonderful thing to have,
especially now.

Diane is so used to having car trouble, she's fearless - not necessarily knowledgeable, but she'll try anything.
