The Latest from Here

I didn't tell you that the other day when Quackers was out back helping with the trench, our friend the fox showed up.

Quackers made some low noises to let everyone know he saw the fox, and the fox stayed over on his side of the yard, a perfunctory visit by his usual standard.

Later, the fox came back with a dead squirrel to show us.

He's never done this before, usually he buries the corpses on the edge of the clearing while he has a snack here, and then digs them up to carry off home. I don't know if this was some kind of response to the introduction of Quackers into the family.

Yesterday afternoon we were all out back, and a female mule deer showed up, eating the bushes. This is the first deer we've seen all year. Quackers made his low noises to alert us. I don't know why the deer didn't spook when she saw us, but maybe she was curious about the goose.

Once the deer left we took Quackers for a dip in the river, and then we all took a long walk (in goose miles) along the river to the edge of the property. He doesn't appear to have tender feet: walks on rocky soil just as well as smoother surfaces, and he doesn't seem to mind going the distance.

This morning Quackers let me know there was a hawk circling overhead. After it was gone, he huddled closer to the house, and I sat outside with him.

Canada geese (which we have in abundance) peck your feet if you are near their babies.

I've seen how nasty those Canadian geese can be. Quackers doesn't have anything to be territorial about, probably a good thing.

Geese are territorial and make wonderful watch pets. They sound the
alarm when they see something out of order. They even attack, not that
they can do all that much.

He approaches strangers with his neck stuck out, looks scarier, but it's all show. We're going to take him swimming right now.

It sounds like Quackers is a guard goose. Do geese eat squirrels? Maybe the fox was protecting his kill from the goose.

I think some geese eat mice, but not our Quackers. He tried to eat a moth the other day, and it dribbled out the side of his bill.

I'm glad you like them. I want to see a moose or an elk walk through the yard one of these days.

Quackers seems to sense that hawks can and do attack small animals. We were told when visiting friends (with Brunswick) who live on the top of the only inhabited Blue Ridge mountain, that we should keep him in our room (next to the cliff's edge with sliders) because of the danger from hawks and other predatory birds.

I wish he could tell us where he has been living up to now.

The animal world is a great world to watch--and try to figure out!!

We seem to be blessed with a lot of visitors this year. I don't think it's the fires, more likely the drought has changed their patterns.
