Hatfields and Mccoys

It's getting ugly here in the canyon - someone posted on the neighborhood Facebook page that they want to buy their neighbor's land before the county buys it, and then the owner of that property pointed out that just because their house was destroyed in the flood, they could still rebuild there if it is elevated above flood level.

This was their home, not a second home/mountain getaway like that of their neighbor. And they are not going to sell their land at bargain prices just because the vulture, monster neighbors are trying for a land grab. So then, other people have chimed in with name-calling, and just picture that these people are all neighbors, and someday they might be once again living next door to each other, about four feet apart.

Standing on our driveway, you can see about 100 fine trout in this part of the river. I sent out an email to the fishing club that our fishing is open for business.

See that lighter chewed off branch? Bucky the Beaver did that, maybe since the flood.

State highway department contractor cleaning up the neighbor's giant debris pile. The size of the cliffs dwarfs that large piece of equipment.

Greedy people ... after Charlie in 2004, cars slowly patrolled our streets looking for houses to buy cheap, convinced people were spooked and eager to sell because they were terrified of another hurricane. This is prime waterfront property. Every house on the island is either on a canal with direct access (15 minutes at most) to the Gulf, or on the pass (5 minutes to Charlotte Harbor, or around the bend on the bay side (where we are -- also a 5 minute trip to bigger water). In your dreams, I was thinking. But a couple from Germany did put $10,000 down on a lovely bay house and then forfeited because of the hurricane, and because of a terrorist attack on an airplane in Italy. Someone unterrified bought it and is happy as a clam.

The IRS and county property tax assessor both tell us if there is a decrease in property values around the area, it's only temporary - 2 or 3 years. Many residents are whining that their taxes should go down a bunch because they lost big trees, but as the tax assessor points out, they didn't pay taxes on those trees before the flood, so why should the lack of trees mean anything much.

I am definitely on the side of those people who own their land, not on the
land grabbers side who want to make a profit from disaster. to you.

You know my situation down here - no near neighbors - so I don't have any need to glom onto distressed properties. These other people who bought houses too close to the neighbors are desperate to acquire more buffer land.

Bucky will have an interesting summer, and I'll be glad to see him again, just to know things are returning to normal.

Has the newest wolf been back or has all the 'claening up' chased him off? Seen any deer?
comment by greatmartin on Apr 5, 2014 9:06 PM ()
A few months ago I would occasionally see tracks from a deer or two, but not lately. The fox comes around every night after dark to get dog biscuits and corn bread. The bear should be waking up any day now. They are omnivores (eat anything) and he will start out eating grass.
