Last night at 8:45 when I came down the driveway there was a car parked at the cabin that is under construction. It was one of the guys working on it, with wife and dog, suddenly homeless, living in their car. They were going to pitch a tent, stay a couple of nights until pay day. We were expecting rain and snow overnight so I felt like I had no choice but to let them stay in the guest cabin. The plumbing has been drained to winterize it, so it's quite a bit like camping out, but at least they are dry and can cook. They are using the bathroom over here, and come and go without disturbing me. I can't wait for them to leave because I don't want them to decide this is where they are going to live, and won't take any money from them because I don't want them to think that creates a sort of rental contract. That house doesn't have central heat, and it's dangerous to use space heaters to keep it warm.
I think payday is probably tomorrow. I hope it is not the case that they have been living in a tent all summer and now that winter is coming all they have is that car for shelter. I've got a business card from a case manager at the local housing authority that I will give them this weekend when I tell them they have to go.
