Fishing in the Snow

Wednesday it was almost 70 degrees here, a beautiful day. The birds were singing and I was out around the property holding one end of a measuring tape for the surveyor.

The surveying crew, which I never saw, were off on some high tor placing section corners. They set up their electronic broadcasting station at my gate and they get their readings from that. They don't use satellites/GPS, not accurate enough.

Yes, that is my road sign, Brown Trout Lane. I'm very proud of it because it makes it easier to give people directions to our place.

A couple of fishermen showed up on Wednesday to check it out because they had a fishing club reservation for all of Thursday. When they told me this, I pointed out that whereas Wednesday was 72 degrees, Thursday was expected to be 33 degrees for a daytime high. "There's no such thing as bad weather," the one who is a fishing guide said, "just inadequate equipment. Sure enough even though it was snowing, they came back and fished most of the day.

Here is the Brown Palace in the snow. About 2 inches fell overall. This was in the morning.

It's still cold here, about 30 degrees today, and still 30 degrees right now at 12:30 with rain starting to fall, a midnight rain. That means it is already warming up from what it was all day.

The Colorado Rockies played the Phillies in Denver tonight. The game didn't start until 8 pm, so finally got done about 12:15 am, and it was a close game all the way to the end. I don't know how the players managed to stay warm enough because baseball is meant to be played on hot summer days. The fans were all bundled up. It was one of those dream Sundays in Denver with two major sporting events at the same time. The football and baseball teams used to share the old Mile High Stadium in Denver. Because the field is a different shape for each sport, the massive east stands were movable: water was pumped under them so they could be floated and moved in or out. Once in a great while there was a very short time to get that done. There wouldn't have been time to get it done tonight, so good thing we now have separate stadiums. The baseball is Coors Field, and football is Nextel Stadium at Mile High.

Just now I heard a fox barking up the side creek. It is a very distinctive bark, nothing like a dog or coyote, and a little bit creepy to hear when alone at night. It went on for several minutes, which is unusual. I wonder what causes them to bark - calling other foxes, or for the fun of it. If it comes closer to the houses and walks through the yard the garage light will come on, but so far it hasn't done so.

You can hear what I heard at this link:
Fox Call Shut your eyes and imagine you are in the pitch-black mountains hearing it echo off the rocks.
