Almost Done

We are in a race to finish the new house before the highway closes on October 2nd. The builders have fooled around all summer, working only about 6 hours a week, and now it's down to the wire. If they aren't done by next Monday, they'll have to come here between 6:30 - 8 am and have to stay all day until 4 pm to get out. I've been telling them this for weeks and weeks, but they are barely able to grasp the concept. Well, who in their right mind could understand that we'll be shut into or out of our homes 17 hours a day for the next several months.

One of the problems is we keep failing the building permit inspections. I asked the county guy in charge why they only bring up two issues each time they come to the house - why can't they give us a whole list.

This is with the exterior stain. The wood siding and decking materials will take up the color differently and the various components will slightly change color over the next couple of months.

I found out that during the road closure every driveway accessing the highway will have its own guard shack and flagger because they can't risk one of us sneaking out onto the highway while the big rock trucks are racing up and down, night and day.

The house is beautiful. These contractors and inspectors sound straight out of The Money Pit movie.

I keep wondering how much worse it would be if it was a fancier house. There's a lot of new ticky-tacky housing developments being built in our area, and I'm sure that they aren't held to these same standards because they're the big money for the county.

The inspectors probably want a bit of cash to stay away. Every year I'd get a different inspector at the motel and he'd contradict what a previous one said. It's a racket.

I'd be afraid to offer them money, because my luck they'd get all huffy and make a big deal about it.

Good luck--did the county guy ever give you an answer?? You need our maintenance crew!!

No, they didn't give me an answer.

Your workers sound like legislators. The house looks great.

Bureaucrats - all levels of government. - Thanks about the house. I'm going to mothball it for the winter and look forward to it being done in the spring.
