Doll Clothes

I don't do much sewing, but I know how. I decided to make clothes for my little cousins' American Girl dolls for Christmas. It's a good way to use up the fabric and supplies my mother left.

It was a learning experience, and I'm not as proud of some of these outfits as others. I almost want to keep going and make some more while I still remember the lessons learned, but it wasn't that much fun, and I'll probably get careless and make a big mess.

It snowed last night, and it's snowing some more after a sunny period. It's 14 degrees out there now, supposed to be 3 degrees (F) tonight. Tomorrow it's supposed to warm up to 33 degrees and I will go to town on the newly-opened highway to buy a rat trap or five.

The snow hides the destruction.

I think those outfits are great, and most importantly, hand made!

My mom tried to teach me needlepoint and fell off her chair laughing at my efforts. I took short cuts. I tried a little sewing with the help of a friend, when I was in my early teens. The friend could do everything. My efforts were so sorry, I gave up. My mom could do everything -- she made clothes for us nonstop before she took a job as a fur finisher. Grueling work. Her hands were roughened as if she had been working in the fields. She made a fur coat from scraps (later stolen in a burglary). My poor, dear mom, never had a break. I have my regrets that I was too oblivious to be a better daughter.

You must be a perfectionist -- the clothes look great. Bundle up.

I learned to sew from my mother, and never did any sewing while she was alive because she was so overly critical of my efforts. She left a whole little house full of fabric and sewing supplies, so that's what I'm using now, and thinking of her. It's liberating to not have her around giving me the look, and if she walked in the door today I'd show her the green dress and the red jumper, but not the pink nightgown or that ugly light brown dress with the collar on crooked. Did I see some new variety of Milano Wafers? I always think of you when I see them in the store.

You did a good job honey. They are in for a big surprise.

I asked their mother to tell me which ones to give to each girl because I didn't know if they would each need their own and then they could trade between them, but she said just put them in one box addressed to both girls, and the boys would love rocks from the flood. Some really pretty ones washed down from Rabbit Creek.

Yes, it's very pretty from inside the house. Whew! It's really cold! Good thing, because it makes me want to go to Las Vegas.
