Where is the Canary?

The cat is sitting on the floor licking her chops, nowhere near the food dish, and I am wondering what she found so satisfying somewhere else in the house. A spider? There hasn't been enough ruckus for her to have just caught a mouse. This afternoon she had a chipmunk and I made her let it go. I hope it was in good enough shape to go on living.

I spent half the day at our canyon association building's open house for the flood recovery. Hardly anyone came in, but it was nice talking to the ones who did. I had to come home and clean the house next door for people coming tomorrow. These folks come every year, and last year they were on their way here when the floods hit. I haven't heard what they did when they got the news - did they turn around and go home, or did they go to the Black Hills or some other vacation spot?

I got a lot done in 3 1/2 hours this afternoon: two loads of laundry, hung out on the clotheslines to dry, brought in, folded and put away, fresh sheets on two beds, vacuumed a two-bedroom house, cleaned the kitchen and mopped it, cleaned the bathroom, cleaned the charcoal grill. There are a couple of things to finish up tomorrow including waxing the kitchen floor with Mop n Glo.

The past couple of days were cold and humid, but today the sun came out and it was a lovely fall day. Unfortunately some of my plants, even though covered with sheets, were nipped by the frost, and their time is over.

P.S. and I also took a little nap in that 3 1/2 hours.

We're expecting first frost tonight and we only had a few days of summer here and there. What hits the west eventually comes here.... (but keep the s***, please).

After the two cold days, it has gotten really hot, and I might be sorry I didn't leave the river pump out. I could have wrapped it in a blanket and it would have been fine.

Cat and woman, hard at their work.

The fact that I thought it worth writing about tells you something about how slow things usually are around here.

You have your vegetable and flower farm to tend to.

I am opening the door to my crawl space today for Max to go in and roust any mice that came in during the last two cold nights. I will then set traps and put out DCon bait before closing up the opening again. My Max is a hunter and a pouncer. He should have a great time with live mousies.

Our cat Buddy used to catch mice in the house but he didn't know what to do with them, so they got away. Sometimes they were injured and crawled off somewhere in the house to die. Eloise is a much better hunter. I used to worry about her eating them inside the house, but lately if she catches a house mouse, she just leaves it dead in the middle of the living room so we can find it.

Impressive list -- you put us to shame. I am constantly saving geckos from Max (when I can get there fast enough). Alternatively I find gecko body parts in various parts of the house. If alive, they lie still, hoping you will think they are dead and go away. I put a Chinese plastic container over them and slide a thin piece of cardboard underneath. Thus contained, I carry them outside and let them go on the grass with a little sermon about how foolish they are to be hanging around our house.

I'm constantly warning the chipmunks and ground squirrels that they are foolish to loiter in our yard, but they never learn.

She got something yesterday - lots of blood on the concrete - and yet she always looks so pristine.

I'm not usually that productive: I like to spread things out and take it very easy.
