What's in the Camera: Spring River in February

image

The house mover started demolition of the addition today, and managed to save these cabinet doors with the little scallop. I'd tried to save them, but am not that good with a screwdriver.

Today was his first day working on it, and he has gutted all of the addition down to the studs, and it's really something to see it all one big room - the bath, the laundry, and the kitchen.

We won't try to save the exterior logs to apply to the outside of the rebuilt addition because there won't be enough of them due to more wall area than before. The back of that old addition nestles into the hillside, and the old logs that were buried are rotting away.

He did save the windows from the kitchen: took a sawsall and cut the whole window frame and window out so it looks like a shadow box, much more usable for something than an old window by itself. The main reason I wanted to save them was as a reminder of what the old windows looked like in case we could recapture that feeling in the new windows.

And here is the river today:

This house mover has worked on a lot of historical buildings, and he enjoys saving what he can, which is nice. I could have hired someone who would come in with a piece of heavy equipment and knock it down without regard to saving anything.

Good progress. Your worker sounds great. The river looks as if any nimble person could walk right through it. I am guessing you have lost some current. It's still beautiful. Keep the pictures coming.

The river is turned down for the winter. I was sorry we didn't get good ice this year because I wanted to walk to the other bank to see how things looked from there.

This is so exciting. Glad you were able to save the windows and get
this elevation done!!

The one window is really charming. I'll have to take a picture some time.

Where's Abe Lincoln when you need him?

That reminds me of the time we were at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and I saw a man who looked exactly like what I think Honest Abe must have looked like. Probably an actor, but he was there with his wife (no she didn't look like Mary), checking in at the front desk.

I love log cabins, but it must be so expensive to put the logs in or restore them. There's a couple of log houses in my area that were original to the site and were restored. I love seeing them.

We are probably going to need 6 to 8 big logs, and I don't know what it is going to cost. The contractor says he has done this before, and knows where to get them. He's a can-do sort of guy, but I don't get the feeling he is over-promising beyond his capabilities.
