Time to Leave

For the month of July we are visited by bright orange Rufous hummingbirds. They have a feisty, territorial personality and jealously guard the bird feeders, creating havoc amongst the other hummingbirds.

This year, the bright orange males left nearly on schedule, but we still have a couple of immature males that are camped out on the most popular feeders and won't let the other birds near. It's time for these little guys to fly south.

Meanwhile, our other birds are starting to leave. We probably have 20 fewer than a week ago.

By the second week of September they will be entirely gone until next April and May. We will miss them a lot.

Hummers have always been some of my favorites, in spite of their ornery streak! Take care.
