Several spells of sub-zero weather have kept our river mostly frozen over.
It is totally silent this time of year, aside from occasional thuds that are the ice cracking. Yes, it looks like a highway.
The intervening warm days and fluctuating water flow cause the ice to collapse in spots. We haven't had any big snow storms this winter, but it has been so cold there is still snow on the ground. Warm, sunny days remind us that spring is just around the corner.
I inherited this property from my dad, including a huge woodpile across the yard that is a glacier of wood. Mr. YouKnow stayed here this winter instead of spending it in Las Vegas, and to keep busy has been mining this wood to burn in the fireplace. He's made quite a dent in it, lots more to go. Look hard: he's standing on it, dwarfed by the immensity.
Before:
After that one national freeze a couple of months ago, my area has not had the freezing temps others have. Storms, too, have turned aside. We get days in which the temperature goes way up, one day to 65 degrees. So I started doing tiny bits of yardwork on the warm days, trying to make up for what I ignored last season.
