Home Sweet Home

Thursday, February 5, 2009

It's a beautiful day here in deep south Mississippi. After getting down to 24 degrees last night, the day emerged bright and sunny--up to 50 degrees this afternoon. Cloudless blue sky, bare hint of a breeze, gorgeous!

This morning David, the yard guy, arrived--finally back from hunting. I went out in the yard to show him some yaupon, mimosa, and other trash bushes to be cut down. He took a chain saw and cut back the azalea bush that had covered the propane tank.

He trimmed the rosebush, trimmed the azaleas by the front of the house, cut down sapling pines and sweet gums that have sprung up too close to the house, used a leaf blower to move some pine straw, and knocked down a wasp's nest from under the eave of the house; picked up dead limbs blown down from the laurel oak behind the mailbox, and cut up a dead pine that had fallen into the yard and threw the pieces back into the woods, then ran the mower over the yard to mulch up leaves.

I got my full dose of Vit. D being out in that brilliant sunshine. The grass is brown and dead, but the irises' have put up green shoots already. It was very quiet, an occasional crow call and now and then a vehicle passing by on the road, otherwise it was silent.

Having a home means always having to get something repaired and/or maintained. It's a pain in the ass, frankly. But I've enjoyed living here so much, and no matter the upkeep, there's nothing like having a home, oh so sweet, home; my little piece of America right under my feet. Bye y'all, susil.
