Shaken and Stirred

Tuesday, April 14, 2009.

Last night a whiz bang boomer of a thunderstorm knocked the power out. It took so long to get it back on because a tree had fallen on the line somewhere. (The power is knocked out so often I'm on a first name basis with the dispatch guy at the power company where you call to report power outages.)

I was all ready to watch Bette Davis in my favorite movie of hers "The Letter" instead had to get a flashlight and unplug everything and lie down till the lights were on again. I dreamed about the time I was on a plane that was being buffeted by a thunderstorm, and one of the engines went out.

A pilot was sitting in the seat in front on me in his flight uniform. The guy sitting next to him grabbed his arm as we passengers were being shaken like dice in a nervous gambler's hand, and said "What's gonna happen?"
I leaned forward, all ears. The pilot said in a calm voice "They will get the engine started again. We'll be alright" but he did look a little pale.

But I thought "What a way to die! To fall 30,000 feet from the sky!" I've seen people die in all kind of ways; as long as there was no fire involved, falling 30,000 feet wouldn't be nearly as bad as wasting away from disease in a hospital bed.
A clap of thunder woke me up and I could hear rain pounding on the air conditioner and I was glad it was only an old memory and I was still alive.
