I read a blurb on the Internet about Laura Bush's new book, in which she talks about a pivotal moment in her life. When she was 17, she was driving her father's car down a dark country road and chatting to her friend in the passenger seat. She admits she was speeding. She ran a stop sign and collided with a car driven by a star school athlete named Michael Douglas. He was killed in the crash.

She says she didn't go to the funeral, by her choice or the Douglas family request, I'm not sure. She blamed the dark road and the sports car the boy was driving among factors in his death. She says his sporty car didn't have a chance against her father's big Chevy. Just once I'd like to hear her say "It was my fault--I was speeding and ran a stop sign and killed him" without any excuses. I believe she's still in denial.

I haven't read the book so don't know if she was charged with anything, like negligent homicide, or reckless driving or anything like that. But it must gall the Douglas family to see her rise to the highest pinnacle of associated political fame while their son lies cold in the grave for all these years.
