For days the entire state of Mississippi has been baking under record high temperatures; today we're broiling--heat index up to 110 degrees. I ran water from the tap to water my houseplants this morning--the water was so warm I had to chill it in the frige for a while to keep from cooking my plants.
Who was it that said "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noonday sun?" I thought of that today when I went to the post office to pick up the mail, then back to the P.O. to mail some bills, then made a 50 mile round trip to the fruit stand to buy blueberries, cherries and strawberries--out in the hottest part of the day, but I was craving fresh fruit.
Mississippi's been in the news, folks--Ray Mabus, one of our former governors, has been sworn in by Vice President Biden as Sec. of the Navy. There are rumbles that our current governor, Haley Barbour is gonna make a run for president in the next presidential election. Run for your lives! He's a self serving tobacco lobbyist who has repeatedly refused to raise the tax on cigarettes though Mississippi's Medicaid program is desperate for funds, and we have one of the lowest cigarette taxes in the nation. He won't get my vote for a lot of reasons.
Then there's native son, actor Morgan Freeman, who is being sued by Demaris Meyer, the woman who was riding with him in his car the night of August 3, 2008, when he wrecked the car near his Mississippi Delta home. The car flipped several times and landed upright, seriously injuring Freeman and Meyer. Meyer alleges Freeman had been drinking that night. Bulldog lawyer Gloria Allred is rpresenting her, which should tell you something. Freeman's wife divorced him.
