The Heiress

TCM is having an Oscar retrospective in February. They're showing Oscar winning and Oscar nominated movies all month. The Heiress was shown tonight; one of the best.
From 1949, here is the cast:
OLIVIA deHAVILLAND--as Katherina Sloper
RALPH RICHARDSON--As Doctor Sloper, her wealthy father
MONTGOMERY CLIFT--As Morris Townsend, Katherine's penniless suitor
MIRIAM HOPKINS--As Aunt Lavinia
"a fortune hunter charms a doctor's plain daughter 1n 19th century New York."

Katherine is raised by her father and aunt in a mansion; she is a mousy shy girl who tries so hard to please her father. Her mother died in childbirth, and the doctor blames her and nothing Katherine does pleases him. Then she is introduced to handsome Morris, and falls madly in love. She is abetted in her meetings with Morris by her Aunt Lavinia.

Dr. Sloper realizes Morris is a fortune hunter but Katherine won't believe him; she is blinded by love. Then her father brutally tells her she has no personality, no charm, no social skills, and the only reason anyone, especially the charming penniless Morris would be interested in her is for her money, and he will disinheirit her if he has to. His words hurt her to the quick; her love for her father dies.

Katherine meets clandestinely with Morris and they plan to elope that night--and she tells him of what her father is going to do. She packs a case and waits by a window for Morris to arrive at 9pm. The clock strikes the passing hours, and he doesn't come. Lavinia suspects that he doesn't want Katherine without her money, and finally Katherine realizes that too. She has been abandoned, jilted, stood up; a woman scorned. She is heartbroken.

Several years pass; Dr. Sloper dies, and leaves everything to his daughter. Morris comes back to town. Lavinia brings him to see Katherine, and Morris pleads with her to elope with him that very night. She agrees, but after he leaves to get a carriage, she bolts the door and finishes an embroidery she is working on. Morris comes back, and knocks and pounds on the door, crying out for Katherine. She walks upstairs as he calls her name over and over at the door.

Lavinia says "Can you be so cruel?"
Katherine coldly answers "Yes I can be cruel. I have been taught by masters."

This is a good one...susil
