The Census, 2010

SUNDAY MARCH 14
Months ago a census worker knocked on my door wearing a badge and carrying a clipboard. She said all she was doing was verifying my address, then she left. Then I got a notice that a census form would be coming and it urged me to fill it out and return promptly. Okay. I'm an honorable patriotic citizen of America, so okay.

I got the census form and was relieved it was a short form, not like the one I got years ago that was a long form of about 15 pages and asked intimate questions, everything from my SSN to queries about ex husbands (both my ex husbands are deceased, long after I left them, by the way. So I call myself a "divorced widow" which I think is cute, ha ha.) But this 2010 form asked few personal questions.

What the 4 or 5 pages really wanted to know was how many people of Hispanic, Chinese, Samoan or other ethnic groups are hiding in your house. It was obvious Uncle Sam is trying to find out exactly how many illegals are in your domicile. For those pages I only had to cross through and write N/A. In a few minutes I was finished and mailed the census in.

Then yesterday, another census worker came by with a flyer, written in English on front, Spanish on back, exhorting that the census is important and must be complied with. I explained to the worker to take me off their list, mine was completed and mailed. It seems like a lot of wasted government time and money to send multiple workers out to the public.
My mother worked for the census years ago and she was required to go in the houses and write down the info given her by residents of said houses. It was confusing when a grandmother, raising a grandchild, called the child hers, but only by going into the home could those kinks of kinship be unknotted. Good luck Uncle Sam, on thinking citizens will be honest and declare the truth on the census forms.

MONDAY MARCH 15
I can't believe it! Doorbell rang early and woke me up--it was the same census worker saying she needed my mailing address, not just the street address. Dammit, I'm finished with the census. I reiterated I had already mailed mine back in--a week ago, and I'm not giving her my PO Box. If the government wants to find me, they will--they've done it multiple times already. I heard on NPR that approx 70% of the population will return the forms--I did, and what do I get? Continued visits from the census. This is ridiculous. susil
