The Bad and the Beautiful

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Yesterday morning early cousin Reeny phoned to ask If I wanted to ride with her to Laurel, sixty miles north, where she had some business to conduct. It was raining cats and dogs but I said okay. She was driving an SUV that beeped if the passenger wasn't buckled up, and beeped if you were too close to something behind you when you were backing up. (That feature impressed me because I'm bad at backing up.)

After she concluded her business, we went to Hudson's, a discount store that's a half block long. Reeny pulled up on the sidewalk right to the front door so I wouldn't drown to let me out. We both have a parsimonious gene, so after searching that warehouse sized store with their 40% and 50% discounts I left with nothing. She saw a ceramic pitcher with flowers on it that she liked but wouldn't buy for herself, so I bought it for her, for a "happy."

Then we went to Ryan's to eat--still pouring rain the whole time. Just as I approached the fried rice and Gen Tsao's chicken, a fat little boy nose height to the serving trays let out a big "KACHOO" all over it. Yuk.

Then Reeny wanted to go to Hudson's Dirt Cheap across the road. This is where Hudson's sells the stuff that doesn't sell at their regular discount store. 60, 70, 80% off-that's more like it, and Reeny bought a few things. We were gone six hours and I was exhausted, and got home with rain still coming down in buckets. The rain has beaten some azalea flowers off, but the wisteria, thugs of the plant world, is not discouraged. Some of the vines have climbed to the top of pine trees and the trees draped with drupes of lavender flowers is pretty I must admit.

Last night a tornado tore up McGee Mississippi, north of Laurel, and the bad weather continues tonight. Well, that's spring for you, the bad and the beautiful together.
