Oklahoma's redshirt Sophomore quarterback sensation is in New York today along with Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow--last year's winner--and Gunslinger Colt McCoy from Texas for a major award ceremony.
Before this day is out, one of the three will pick up some heavy hardware--the Heisman Trophy. Awarded each year to college football's best player, Bradford appears to be a slight favorite, after picking up the Davy O'Brien award Thursday evening, given each year to the best quarterback in the NCAA.
The race is so tight, however, that the New York Athletic Club, which sponsors the award, only invited the three rather than the customary final four finishers to be present when they announce the winner.
All three led their teams to 11-1seasons with The Sooners, Gators and Longhorns finishing one, two, three respectively in the final regular season BCS rankings.
If Bradford wins, he would become the fifth Oklahoma Sooner to be so honored. Previous winners include Jason White, quarterback, 2003; Billy Sims, running back, 1978; Steve Owens, running back, 1969; and Billy Vessels, running back, 1952.
Bradford's numbers are spectacular this year. He directs a potent offense, that leads the nation in scoring, averaging 54 points per game. He has passed for 4529 yards, averaging 354.8 yards per game, second only to Graham Harrell among major conference teams.
When he gets his team in the red zone, he becomes deadly, rarely missing a scoring opportunity. He also led the nation in touchdown passes with 48. He has not thrown an interception since the Texas game October 11.
