An Apple a Day

We've been trying to take care of all our dr. appointments while we are out for summer vacation. M has been supposed to go to the dentist forever now-I think they're supposed to make their first visit when they are a year old. Well, she's almost 8 and we finally made it. I knew she would cry and I wasn't surprised...she did. It started when they took the x-rays and went on from there. She's always had issues about things in our mouth. She would rather have blood drawn than a strep test. That's saying a lot considering the last time they drew blood she almost fainted. Guess she shouldn't have watched the procedure. The dentist was all good news though. No cavities and no decay. I do have to start helping her brush again though. She's leaving too much plaque on her teeth. Everytime she eats she asks if her teeth are still white.

Today was our 3-month diabetes visit. Her A1C was up to 8.1. The idea number is between 6 and 7 but her dr. wasn't too concerned. She did a few small changes on basal rates and carb ratios and that was it. She did give us a referral to a psychologist who works with children with illness. M has had a lot of illness issues this spring and I really am not sure how many of them are real and how many are a need for attention and escape. She's always loved school but I think some of them were her way of missing school. I think she's bored, but she doesn't qualify as gifted/talented so no extra services or enrichment activities. I don't even want to go into that issue.

We've also done an opthamologist appointment. (I love that word!) Since she does have diabetes, the dr. wanted to go ahead and get a baseline done on her eyes. That one went really well too. We don't have to go back for 18 months. The dr. also told us there was no reason to come back to Texas Children's for the next appointment. She follows directions well enough to go anywhere. (I didn't really know that was why we were going to TCH but hey, at least the next one can be closer.)

Next week I think we are hopefully finishing up. M has a ENT appointment to check out all of the allergy stuff that came up this spring. The last time we went in for anything the dr. did think her adenoids were swollen so we'll check that out and rule out the last of the organic reasons for all of the illness this spring. That will really be the last check to see how much of it is psychosomatic.

I scheduled all of my appointments for one day. I have a psychiatric appt. in the morning and then the girly dr. after that. I've been taking meds for anxiety and depression for quite awhile and the doc wants to make sure that they are appropriate drugs. As my family can all attest, me without them is not a pretty picture! This spring I had to add Xanax on top of the regular meds. I know they are extremely addictive and I'm very careful in how I take them. Some days though are just more than I can handle. You know you're in trouble when the whirring of the refigerator makes you want to scream!

This doesn't qualify as an interesting writing in any way. But it's what we've been up to!

Great news on the dentist. You guys have been really busy with the white coats. It sounds like you might have gotten pretty caught up on the docs.

Glad that M is getting good reports. She is growing and will have to adjust each time with her meds since she is getting older. I'm glad the Dr's are keeping such a close eye on her.

Glad M has been doing well with her appointments.... I hate the dentist too - I think we all do - so she's normal in that respect!
