Define Style

Who would think I would ever write a blog about football!  For those who know me it would seem unbelievable!  I've watched a lot of college football this season.  J is an avid LSU fan and I started watching last year with him.  This year I've seen a lot of LSU and a lot of Tech games.
This is the first year I've taken much interest in rankings though.  Tech this year was a contender in the Big 12 and I've paid attention.  When you pay attention to the Big 12 there's lots of talk about style points.  I thought style had to do with fashion or how you carried yourself.  I sure never thought about it in terms of football.  And when I do think of it in terms of athletics I think of a "stylish" play.  You know what I'm talking about...when you see a player leap across the goal line for a touchdown or a player jump in the air to intercept a pass.  Who knew it had to do with kicking another team's butt!

Thursday was the rival game of the year for Texas colleges.  University of Texas played Texas A & M.  No surprise that Texas won with a score of 49-9.  I would think that would count as a whupping.  According to Mack Brown, the coach at UT, he chose not to run up the score any more than that.  "If it takes 56 points to get someone to vote for you, folks we have a bad system." he said about the game.  "We sit here and talk all the time about sportsmanship. The NCAA sends
out messages about sportsmanship and then we throw it right out the
window when we need to get to a game."

I mentioned this in a previous post.  My dad was a football coach.  He truly thought that the lessons you learned on a football field were life lessons.  It was a lesson about working with a team, hard work, perseverance and winning and losing with grace.  Those belly slaps all through a game are not example of graceful winning.
Then there's the whole matter of where you stand in the rankings.  My beloved Tech was 2nd and it was so nice.  Then one loss knocked them to no. 7.  It was definitely an @## kicking.   We should have dropped.  But should one loss drop you 5 places.
There's the matter of the game that is being played in Oklahoma tonight.  If no. 12 OSU can beat Oklahoma then it comes back to Tech and Texas and Tech wins because they beat Texas.  Hey it sounds good to me, but it doesn't sound too fair!
I tried to find the percentage of college football players that go on to graduate.  The only numbers I could find were old ones.  They were anywhere from 50-65%.  I'm pretty sure that the other 50-35% don't go on to play professional football.  So where does that leave them?

Sounds to me like you have a good understanding of the sport.

I like football, but am getting in to watching more and more golf. It just seems more relaxing. Thanks for the info on "style."

Football... the only time I was really interested was my last year of college when I went to all the games. Of course, it is on all season here, but I don't pay much attention to it. Sometimes I look at the replay when my husband says it was a good play... that's about it.
