Like Water for Chocolate

Passionate Tita (Lumi Cavazos)

is in love with Pedro (Marco Leonardi),

but her controlling mother (Regina Torne)

forbids her from marrying him. So when Pedro marries her sister, Tita throws herself into her cooking -- and discovers she can transfer her emotions through the food she prepares. A feast for the senses, this magical romance from director Alfonso Arau

was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and a Golden Globe.

Rated R 1 hour 45 minutes 1992

3.38 stars (Dale-2.5, David-4.25). Wish we knew spanish...bet it was beautiful. The subtitles did not match the english dialogue. Cinematography was beautiful, symbolism was fascinating.

It's refreshing to see an artistic movie once in awhile.

I think we would have loved it more if we knew Spanish and could turn the subtitles off. But we both are Hard of Hearing so we switched the language to English and had the subtitles on...UGH.

Yes, I remember gaining 5 pounds from watching this film--at the same time there were a couple of other 'foodie' movies
