The second half of my double feature reconnected me with old friends. I have been a huge fan of Sex and the City for some time and was thrilled to hear that a movie was coming out. I also know that I was going to have to see it without Ray because he is not the same kind of fan I am.
The movie definitely lived up to my expectations. It was like getting a whole season of the show in one sitting. Each of the girls has settled into their lives: Carrie is loving her stronger relationship with Big, Miranda and Steve are still living in Brooklyn and raising their son together, Charlotte and Harry are still enjoying the fairy tale live with their adopted Chinese daughter Lily, and Samantha is out West managing the career of her boy toy.
It does not take long for things to get exciting as their worlds are shaken up with both the good and the bad. I know that the theater was filled with laughter and tears as the movie progressed. Martin made it clear that even a newcomer can enjoy the film, but I felt that there were so many really rich details evident for special moments for fans of the TV series to like, such as the ongoing reparte between Anthony and Stanford and the return of Enid Frick, Carrie's harpy editor at Vogue who is wonderfully portrayed by Candace Bergen.
Jennifer Hudson premiers a new character named Louise, who is hired to be Carrie's personal assistant. Besides adding some much needed little color to a storyline set in Manhatten, she also give Carrie a chance to remember back to her own arrival in the big city.
As with the show, the movie highlights the strong bond of friendship.
On an interesting side note, it seemed like there were a group of teens that had decided to dress up in high fashion to see the movie. I also seemed to be one of the few guys in the audience. Most seemed to have been dragged awkwardly behind their excited wives. There was one gay couple that seemed as thrilled to be there as I did.
Martin got me thinking when he said that he was a lot like Samantha, and I really think he is right about that. I can't help but wonder who I would consider myself to be. A part of me thought I was a bit like Miranda because I always seeme to have my doubts and worries, but I think that I am more like Charlotte because she always wants everything to be just right and she has a positive perspective on things. Who do you think you are?
