Another School Committee Meeting

This picture really summarizes how things are going in our school district thanks to the problems we are having with getting a teachers' contract. I truly feel that both sides do want to find a resolution so we can get back to the way things are supposed to be, but the school committee and the teachers are facing off, two sides of the same coin. Neither is happy about the situation, but they can't seem to find a way to come to some sort of resolution.

Last night as part of a pretty thorough meeting with a lot going on, the school committee looked a contract proposal put together by the mediator that was hired to bring the two sides back together. The teachers actually ratified the contract. The school committee got a chance to respond to that.

They had taken some time to review the figures with the town's treasury department and the major problem is that there does not seem to be enough money to pay for the contract proposal over the course of all three years. As a result, the committee received the proposal and tabled it. They then voted to request a new mediator because this year long process seems to have failed with the current one and the two sides seem further apart than ever.

It is really a sad thing.

Dont you have collective labour contracts for all schools in your country. Here all teachers have the same conditions and same salary scales. All based on age, grade and level of teaching.

We got no raise and no step increase. OUr school became an A school (which means a bonus for us) and the idiot teachers voted to give 25% of it back to the school! I mean, come on, we did the work! This all bites badly!

Several school districts here in TN. are having the same kind of problems. One was like 3 weeks late starting school because of it. Others are cutting out all teachers aide's because of the funding. I have a friend on the school board in one of the local counties and she said they had to cut out some programs this year, just to pay for gas for the buses. It's getting rough.

Does this mean you are on the school board now or just an interested person?

Teachers here have been denied the raises they won last year and now it looks like no raise next year--of course the excuse is 'no money' yet our government officials cerainly have a lot of unnecessary 'perks'--you really wonder, except for the love of it, why teachers teach!

I think being a teacher today is a very hard job. they have so much to deal with along with trying to teach their students. I hope the two sides can come to a solution.
