Real Murders by Charlaine Harris

Aurora Teagarden lives what many would consider a nice life. She is 28 years old and worls as a librarian in Lawrenceton, Georgia. She helps her mother run a condo complex that is owned by her mom. While her parents are divorced, they have civil interaction. Roe even enjoys having her little half-brother come and spend the weekend with her from time to time.

She does have what many would consider a bizarre hobby. She is a member of the Real Murders Club. The club is made up of a group of people who all have an interest in unsolved true crimes, particularly those tied to murder. They meet once a month so one of the members can present the crime and investigations, allowing them to discuss the investigation and who they thought might have committed the crime.

At the start of the novel, Roe has just arrived for the monthly meeting. She is supposed to be doing the presentation this time around. Just as they are about to start, she notices that the member that helped with the set up is missing so Roe goes to try and find her. When she steps into the hall's kitchen, she finds the woman dead. Roe also recognized that the woman, her death, and the arrangement of her corpse seems to mirror the true crime she was supposed to be presenting.

It does not take long for Roe to take on the mantle of superslueth witht he help of Arthur Smith, a member of the club and a detective on the police force, and Robin Crusoe, a popular mystery writer that has just moved into her mom's condo complex. Besides being her partners in the search, she finds each of them wooing her.

There is no shortage of clues for Roe as the murders continue, and the way the evidence is being planted, it is clear that not only are the victims members of the club, but the murderer probably is as well.

There is a nice mix of quirky characters from this small Georgia community that fills the roster of suspects and keeps the reader interested. Roe is a strong character that is able to maintain her average-ness as she faces the odds in the hopes of solving the crime before her friends, family, or even herself are victims of the murder. She learns before long that Real Murders are not necessarily as much fun as she thought.

Harris does a great job with this one. It is a nice cozy, and I mean that in the technical term, mystery. It is a little different since I am used to her mysteries having just a bit of the supernatural tied to them. It did not prevent me from loving it. OK ... I admit that I am probably a little biased because Roe and I share a profession, but I promise that it is good! It would do Agatha Christie or Jessica Fletcher proud!
