Making up for Yesterday

Today seemed to make up a bit for yesterday. Besides having to catch up on being away, I also am in the last minute mode of having to get ready for the summer reading program. That usually means I am pretty frantic making sure everything is scheduled the way it needs to. I usually settle into things once it starts because at that point, all I can really do is sit back and enjoy the roller coaster ride. It is either going to work at that point after months of preparations.

I got a ton of things done today. There is still quite a bit that needs to be done, but I am sliding though the remaing itemds on my summer reading program to-do list. It did leave me quite a bit invigorated after yesterday when I almost got nothing done on my list.

The teens have already started coming in to ask about the details of what will be happening this summer. I already have started a list of kids who want to do Book Buddies and participate in the statewide pen pal program I coordinate with all the libraries in Rhode Island.

So, here's to another successfull summer reading program! Maybe this year I will break triple digits in the number of teens who participate. I have promised to get another tattoo if they read a combined total of more than 350 books this year. I am wondering when I should break the news to Ray!

I hope you get 100 teens this year...wouldn't that be great? You know, in most cases teens only need to be stimulated by someone who cares, someone they don't feel is judging, lecturing, forcing, or trying to be one of them. You can be yourself and still connect, but it has to be done in ways that are of interest to them. You seem to have that gift and the relationship you have with the teens and their interest in the programs (and in the library itself!) are proof that it can be done if it's done right. The tattoo "incentive" is a great idea...not only is it a daring thing (which they love), but it's something they are sharing WITH you and your life...it shows you include them outside of the "library life".

You have such a great mind. When my grandson grows up, think I can get you to move to Pennsylvania? The kids there (in R.I.) are so lucky to have you.

We'll have to exchange pics of our tatoo's when I get mine.
I like the statewide penpal idea.

My kids (and I) used to love the summer reading programs at our local library. They only offered them for elementary school aged kids, so my children have since outgrown the programs. But to my delight, I was checking books out last week and noticed a flyer on the desk introducing a teen summer reading program. I tried to get the feel for how successful it was doing, but the lady didn't have a clear answer. If they have it again for teens next summer, I know my kids will want to join.
Have a great day AJ
